DONALD HARRISON

Carrying the Spirit of New Orleans

When Donald Harrison walks onto the stage, he brings more than music with him — he brings the spirit, history, and culture of New Orleans.

Born and raised in the birthplace of Jazz, Harrison has spent his career carrying on the city’s traditions while pushing the music into the future. Known around the world as one of the premier saxophonists in Jazz, Harrison is also recognized as a Big Chief in the Black Masking Indian tradition — a sacred cultural movement deeply rooted in the African American history of New Orleans.

For Harrison, Jazz has never been merely entertainment. It is storytelling. It is culture. It is identity.

Over the years, Harrison has shared the stage with some of the world’s greatest musicians while building a reputation as both a master traditionalist and a fearless innovator. His sound reflects the influence of legends like Charlie Parker and John Coltrane, as well as the spiritual rhythms of New Orleans itself.

But beyond the music, Harrison embodies something even deeper — the preservation of culture.

As Big Chief of Congo Nation, Harrison continues the centuries-old Black Masking Indian tradition, which blends African, Caribbean, and Native American influences into one of America’s most distinctive cultural expressions. Through elaborate handcrafted suits, chants, rhythm, and community celebration, the tradition honors resistance, pride, and heritage passed down through generations.

That same spirit comes alive with every performance.

At the Yrēfy Scottsdale Jazz Festival, audiences witnessed more than a concert. They felt the heartbeat of New Orleans. Harrison’s performance united tradition, soul, improvisation, and cultural storytelling, connecting generations of music lovers.

His appearance at the festival also reflected the broader mission of International Jazz Day Arizona — using Jazz to unite people through culture, education, and community. Under the direction of William “Doc” Jones and the International Jazz Day AZ Foundation, artists such as Donald Harrison help bridge the gap between Jazz’s past and its future.

In many ways, Harrison stands as a living reminder that jazz is America’s greatest cultural gift to the world.

From the streets of New Orleans to international stages worldwide, Donald Harrison continues to carry the torch of the Jazz tradition, inspiring the next generation to honor the music’s roots and keep its spirit alive.

In New Orleans, jazz is more than music.

It is life itself.
