The Sound of What’s Next
Every generation needs its voice — and Alex Joy is fast becoming one of those voices.
Funny story: When I first made the call to Yasek Manzano from the U.S., I had a great conversation and walked away thinking, “This brother is the future of Cuban jazz.” A few days later, I found out I had actually been talking to Alex Joy — not Yasek!
Turns out, it was a happy mix-up. Alex is the real deal — a respectful, grounded, and incredibly talented young guitarist who brings his own fire to the music. And now that we’ve connected, I’m truly looking forward to hanging out with him and seeing what kind of magic we might create together.
Alex is part of a new wave of young musicians who are fluent in tradition but fearless in innovation. His guitar work blends classic jazz phrasing with soulful bends, Latin textures, blues roots, and the occasional firestorm of funk. He doesn’t just follow charts — he listens, he responds, and most importantly, he feels.
Though still early in his career, Alex is already developing a sound that’s entirely his own. When he steps onto the stage, there’s no ego, just intent. Whether he’s comping behind a vocalist or taking a solo of his own, he brings honor to the groove and humility to the spotlight — two traits that can’t be taught, only lived.
“When I see young artists like Alex, I’m reminded of why I started the Scottsdale Jazz Festival — to make sure the future of this music has a place to grow.” – Doc Jones
He’s not just part of the story. He is the story — the next page in the jazz legacy we’re writing together, both in Arizona and around the world.
